What is Chronic adenoiditis?

Adenoiditis is an inflammation of the adenoids caused by infection. Adenoids are masses of lymphatic tissue that help the body fight infection. Adenoids are found in the throat, also called the pharynx, just behind the nose. Along with the tonsils, adenoids are the first line of defense against bacteria and viruses.

Chronic adenoiditis is characterized by a considerable duration, and besides its own clinic, it is characterized by manifestations that arise in the form of ear pathology, pathology of the lower respiratory tract and paranasal sinuses, as well as pathologies of a different type. There are differences in clinical and morphological manifestations based on the inflammatory response prevailing in the patient in a particular case, as well as immunological reactivity and the degree of general allergization.

How common is Chronic adenoiditis?

Adenoiditis can be caused by a bacterial infection, such as infection with the bacteria Streptococcus. It can also be caused by a number of viruses, including Epstein-Barr virus, adenovirus, and rhinovirus.
Chronic adenoiditis may result from repeated acute attacks or from persistent infection.

Risk factors

There are many risk factors for Chronic adenoiditis, such as:

  • Recurring infections in the throat, neck, or head
  • Infections of the tonsils
  • Contact with airborne viruses, germs, and bacteria

Children are more susceptible to adenoiditis. This is because adenoids progressively shrink through childhood. By the time you reach your late teen years your adenoids are generally gone.

Diagnosis & treatment

The information provided is not a substitute for any medical advice. ALWAYS consult with your doctor for more information.

How is Chronic adenoiditis diagnosed?

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist called an otolaryngologist. An otolaryngologist is also known as an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor. An ENT doctor has specialized training in infections, diseases, and conditions of the ear, nose, and throat.

Your ENT will most likely perform a physical examination to determine where the infection is located. They will also ask about your family history to determine if your condition is hereditary.
Other tests can include:

  • Throat examinations using swabs to obtain samples of bacteria and other organisms
  • Blood tests to determine the presence of organisms
  • X-rays of your head and neck to determine the size of your adenoids and extent of infection

How is Chronic adenoiditis treated?

Management of chronic adenoiditis is planned according to the degree of airway obstruction, age of the patient and related morbidity. Considering the individual risk analysis of patients in terms of anesthetic, post-operative complications and recurrence, non-surgical treatment could be considered in patients who are unfit for surgery.

Topical nasal steroid spray can be used as an alternative treatment in chronic adenoiditis when surgery is contraindicated. It can also be considered when surgery needs to be postponed at the request of the patient.
